This hardy deciduous maple has a rounded, dense habit and a spreading crown. Its very characteristic purple-red foliage turns brilliant red in autumn. Its bark is reddish brown.
The Acer palmatum atropurpureum finds an ideal location in the garden in an isolated place or in beds to allow other plants to benefit from its shade.
It is magnificent in bonsai culture and is a subject much sought after by enthusiasts of Japanese culture.
