Description:
Bombax ceiba is a fast-growing tree that reaches an honorable height of 30 meters in its native area.
It offers several interesting ornamental characteristics such as its trunk which is adorned with thick and solid thorns, a foot with partially visible roots and bright red flowers.
The flowers are fleshy with bright red-orange petals and appear in February and March when the tree has lost its leaves.
This tree will do well in a Mediterranean climate in the ground. In cooler climates it will withstand short frosts at -10°C in which case it can be grown in pots and must be brought in in winter.
