A sensitive plant, the mimosa quadrivalvis folds down its leaves when touched or exposed to heat.

An annual or short-lived perennial, its foliage is evergreen and the plant has a bushy or carpet-like habit. The stems are thin, branched and spiny. The leaves are similar to those of ferns and are 5 to 10 centimeters long, bright green to grayish green.

Spherical inflorescences 1-2 centimeters in diameter, pink-purple appear in late spring until frost.

The plant grows rapidly at temperatures above 20°C and much slower below this temperature.
